Collect a sample of 300 nurse bees by putting 1/2-cup of bees from a brood frame. Make sure you do not have the queen.  Next, place the bees into the shaker and cover the bees with alcohol.  Then, Vigorously shake the Varroa Mite Shaker for about 1 to 2 minutes to wash the mites off the bees. Lastly, return the Varroa Mite Shaker to its vertical posistion. Count the dislodged mites. To find the percentage of infestation, divid the total number of mites found in your sample by 3. Generally, treatment is highly recommended if you find more than 3 mites per 100 bees. (or 9-10 mites in a 300-bee sample).
